Settling up with UPI: how to clear group debts without a payments app

You do not need an app that moves money to settle a group. You need to know exactly who pays whom, the fewest transfers that clear everyone, and a record that it happened. UPI does the transfer; the ledger does the rest.

Step 1: get the real numbers

Open the group's Balances tab. Each row is one debt: a name, a direction, an amount. With simplify debts switched on, Splitzy has already reduced the chains, so if you owe someone who owes someone else, the middle person drops out and you pay the end of the chain directly. The total you pay is exactly the same; only the number of transfers shrinks.

Step 2: pay the way you always do

Open your UPI app, send the amount on the row, and note the transaction reference. Nothing in Splitzy has to be connected to your bank for this, which is the point: the app never sees your UPI PIN, never holds a balance, and cannot move a rupee.

Step 3: record it in two taps

Back in Splitzy, tap Settle up on that row. The sheet is pre-filled with the two people and the amount; choose UPI as the method, paste the reference if you want a paper trail, and save. The balance on both sides updates at once, and the payment appears in the group's Payments tab where the other person can see it.

Balances with a Settle up button on each row
Each row has its own Settle up button; the sheet opens with the two people and the amount already filled in.

Partial payments and mistakes

Paid half now and half on Friday? Record two settlements; the balance shows what is left. Sent it to the wrong person, or entered the wrong amount? Delete the payment from the Payments tab and record it again. Balances are recomputed from the records, so a correction is never a hack.

Direct debts outside a group

Not every bill belongs to a group. When Olivia covers a dinner for Daniel alone, add it as a direct expense with a friend. The Friends screen shows one balance per person across every group and direct expense you share, with the same Settle up button, so month-end can be a single payment per friend.

The weekly nudge

If you owe someone and forget, Splitzy sends one reminder a week, by email and as a notification, listing who you owe and how much. People who are owed money are never nagged; there is nothing for them to do. The reminder switches off in Settings if you would rather not have it.

Try it on your next bill

Splitzy is free, has no ads, and works without signal. Create a group, add the first expense, and let it keep score.
